Props to Other_hbk for using his mantra, I felt it was appropriate.

While the weekend was a good time, I fell into a Black Hole the other day.  Very miserable, then very angry.  Lifting at the gym didn't help, but it did fuel my performance.  It wasn't until well after dinner, into the apple pie and cosmo phase of the evening, that things seemed to lighten a bit.

The next day, like Kaizer Soze, it was gone.  I don't know what to fully attribute it to, but I can point at some factors:  a full night's sleep, several successful support calls, and frequent repetitions of "get over it."

In a less serious vein, let's talk about BMI for a moment, which I refer to as Body Mass Idiocy.  Does anyone know of a more accurate means to factor this?  The simple formula tells me that I'm overweight (at 27.4%), but it also (wisely) says that people who work out have a higher than normal number w/out being unhealthy.  Do you just say, "hey I work out, punk" and multiply the result by .8 or something?

Calipers or a displacement tank are what you need.

I'll look into calipers; I've also priced out some scales that will measure it. As long as I follow the instructions, I should get a consistant picture.

Mmm iron therapy.

I say it's a crock. :) A 5lb difference pushes me from upper end of normal into overweight, and my weight varies by 5lbs over the course of a day.

I only try to observe what I weigh first thing in the morning. Anything else is probably my body lying to me :)

Get your body fat percentage instead.
also, you can do your waist to hip ratio and see if it's healthy (heart-healthy that is).

What the fabulous Ms Nepenthe said. Bone structure also counts.
I suppose you could google for it. I know that way back in the day, in gym class, we caluclated our fat percentage and there was a quick and dirty way to estimate whether you had a small, medium, or large frame. It was based on your height and circumfrence of your wrist, I think.
I agree pretty much with all that's been said about BMI being a crock, especially if you lift. I'm borderline on the BMI at around 168 at the moment. I have been as big as 170-185 if I really push it with even more weigth and more frequent workouts. With my height and frame and they insist that's overweight. Bullshit. Kazilla smash BMI. ::growls::

I *hate* BMI. Anyone who has any muscle mass will be considered overweight. In fact, I know someone who trained for the Ironman and was told BY HER PHYSICIAN that she was obese because the BMI said so.....WTF?!?!? It's like the entire healthcare industry FINALLY said "ok ok...so weight alone isn't an accurate way to determine health. We'll take a mini-step forward and use BMI, though, instead of actually logically figuring out what would be best." /rant

Do you really care how much you weight or how much fat you have relative to muscle? If the latter is the case, I imagine the best way to measure it would be that fat pincher device. Percentage body fat is a much more realistic way to measure how healthy you are than anything else. I bet there are some tutorials online for measuring body fat (you might not actually need that pincher thing after all). Let me know if you find anything - and I'll check sometime tomorrow myself and let you know what I come up with.

Most of my research pointed towards calipers, full body immersion, or certain scales that use a small electric current to measure body fat. I'm leaning towards the latter myself. They aren't too expensive in the grand scheme of things.

I hate that sniggity BMI thingy. I find it a crock, for over 80% of the population is overweight due to it. Those that are slightly overweight are shown as morbidly obeise. The only thing that seems to work like a charm is doing the "Pinch Test", where they use calipers to pinch certain areas to index the percentage of fat one has, within 10%. I have always found those more accurate than the BMI crappamajigger.

While in the Navy, they were famous for using the BMI for yearly physicals. If one failed that, they measured you. This+That+Neck. Some of the guys were body builders, and they came out more overweight than the BMI. One guy I knew had to ask the command for permission to use the pinch test. Due to the results of the other two, he was put on a mandatory weight loss program until the results of the pinch. Personally, I like "love handles" on a guy, wierd thing I have I guess.
