The Crucible reminded me of what I liked and don't like about musical theater. The lack of structure in the singing, or odd rhythms they use to convey dialogue is off putting when you are used to rhymes and traditional verses. Sometimes, so real melodies sneak out and captivate you. There' still a lot of power and emotion in the singing, which is easy to lose yourself in. Sin, deceit, betrayal, hysteria. These themes are as real now as they were then, which gives the play an immediacy that keeps you interested. All the performers were very good, John Proctor lost some strength at the end of the first act (but he's got to sing a lot). Tituba's song about the Devil giving her black wings to fly out of prison and back to Barbados was especially evocative. I didn't get to meet up with the person I wanted to, and my drinks partner was out sick, so the evening fell a little short.

Saturday held another tournament in Abington. I walked away with a 1-1-1 record, but a very low showing due to failing to achieve various scenario objectives. I suppose I'll chalk it up to a learning experience for the new army. I redeemed the day with an especially fabulous night of dancing at Sin O Matic. The music was on, the place was crowded, and there were many new yet familiar faces out there. The night ended on a high note. The good times continued into our DND game, where the invading forces broke against our defense and were utterly scattered (accompanied by suitable epic music I downloaded for the occasion).

The tide of awesomeness is not eternal, and the past few days have all been lackluster. Work is slow, ennui levels are high. Three days running definitely puts it in funk territory (despite some good lifting yesterday). Work ends early today, which leaves extra time for last minute ingredient shopping, cleaning, and supply gathering.
