jchrisobrien: (big trouble!)
Started the day with a walk down St. Catherine's and tasty breakfast at Reuben's.  Then we met up with Noize_gurl, Kingsley, and their friend Gabe for our first movie of the day...

Arch angels  Just like a manga comic come to life: candy cute, weird juxtaposition of live action, animation, and CGI.  Don't think too hard about the movie, just enjoy it for the cotton candy that it is.  Gothic lolita fans will enjoy parts of it, and the villain of the movie used a long chain with an iron rose at the end.  Chain fighters are all the rage now.  We took a break for good sangria and really tasty fries, then it was back in the theater to see...

Ghost in the Shell: SAC Solid State Society  Haujobb would have been the logical choice for soundtrack here, but the original music was amazing.  I haven't read any of the Ghost in the Shell comics, and saw the original movie a while ago.  There were a lot of different threads going on, which did get wrapped up and explained in the end, though it did leave me scratching my head.  The animation was decent, and the story played out nicely.  Definitely worth watching.

I almost took a chance on seeing Yellow Fellas (Japanese salarymen go all Fight Club and try to wipe out The White Man), but the line for this movie was insane (it was a free screening, as opposed to the other movies).  The review for Yellow Fellas was very good, I'll be keeping my eyes open for it.  The number of movies at the festival were astonishingly good, for those who are horror/ fantasy / hong kong action fans.  You can see the full festival line up here!  I hope to track a bunch of them down and have a screening sometime.  We took a break for McSushi (turns out it was a chain, I wouldn't recommend  it) and then sat down for...

The Banquet.  If Hero and House of Flying Daggers made you swoon, you'll love this film.  Well, you'll love it and be a little disappointed by the ending, as we were.  The sets, costuming, and music are what you'd expect, not quite as color co-ordinated as Hero, but very striking.  Good acting from Zhang Ziyi and Zhou Xun, wonderful choreography from Yuen Wo-Ping, and a nice take on a certain famous play by Shakespear.  Definitely worth seeing if you can.

We had time before our next film, so Amanda showed silentq and I around the city.  We tried to catch a view of the city from Mont Royal, but we were denied parking.  The views were closed off for people watching the fireworks, which somehow we missed.  We settled for driving around the city, pretending we were in a Michael Man movie:  all neon lights and rivers of darkness.  We dropped Amanda off, then shambled in line for the last film of our night, appropriately titled...

Ten Nights of Dreams  The dancing woodcarver was the funniest of the bunch, it reminded me what would happen if you dressed up some dancers from Ceremony in tribal/shaman clothes and set them loose on a drum circle.  My own exhaustion helped make the films even more surreal.  We drifted back to our hotel.  I didn't dream at all that night.
