I highly recommend Persepolis, a graphic novel in the vein of Maus, by Iranian Marjane Satrapi. I read it last summer. (Seems that an animated version was recently made as well, according to imdb.) It was stunning. It gives unique insight into the decades of recent Iran, and the many confusing, conflicting, and changing situations there, all through a child's experience.
