After watching Star Trek, I told some of my friends about TheFreak's excellent list of homages to the original series.

Almost a week later, I am finally sharing that fun with the rest of you who don't read his journal. Mad props to TheFreak!

~ Well there's the obvious, such as the recreation of Kirk's Kobayashi Maru test, the fact that Pike is his predecessor, and Majel Barret's computer voice (finished two weeks before she died).

~ The bug they put into Pike that made everyone cover their ears before it turned out to be a different bug.

~ "Spooooock!!" a la "Khaaaaan!"

~ Apparently, there is a tribble behind Scotty (that I missed).

~ Bones's habit of injecting things into Kirk when he least expects it. (My favorite was in an old episode where McCoy rips Kirk's shirt and injects him and Kirk barely even notices)

~ I totally missed it (due to the horrific nature of watching Enterprise), but Admiral Archer and his beagle refer to Scott Bakula's character on that show.

~ Sulu's reference to fencing.

~ Death of a red shirt, even if it was an engineer and not security

~ Spock's gifting to Scotty of a formula that hasn't been discovered yet, just as Scotty did to the 'inventor' of transparent aluminum in Star Trek IV.

~ They are stranded on Delta Vega, which is the planet from the first episode of Star Trek (if you don't count "The Cage")

~ Captain Pike is in a wheelchair at the end, which made em go, "Beep twice for yes, once for no!"

~ I only noticed this the second time, but Pike is also wearing a uniform from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Am I the only one who liked those uniforms?

~ Kirk pisses off Spock in order to save the ship, paralleling his "father was a computer and his mother an encyclopedia," speech.

~ 80% of Bones's line and a couple of Scotty's.

~ Spock 'infering' rather than lying

~ The mystery of Uhura's first name (which fanboys were all over), which she never gave on the show.

Memory fizzled. I'm sure there were more, but I forgot. Two other things I realized this time around:

~ This was the first movie Tyler Perry's done that he didn't write/direct. And if anyone's gonna rule over a fleet, it would be him.

~ The gaping plot hole at the center of the film ("Spock and the Federation didn't stop the supernova in time...so I will make it so they can never not do that again...and punish Spock for missing it by minutes....um...or I could warn Romulus...crap.") was more noticible. But I notice also that the main difference between this and the gaping plot holes in Wolverine is that these guys know how to make a film. They can entertain the pants of you, pulling an effective sleight-of-hand that makes you go, "Hey wait, that doesn't...oh, cool! Wow!" Whereas Wolverine was more, "Hey, wait, that doesn't make sense...oh, an action scene...that is anticlimactically over in seconds...so, about that plot hole."

And some nerdboy stuff that I wondered about:

~ Why is the Enterprise symbol the symbol of Starfleet? The only thing I can think of is that the U.S.S. Kelvin must have had it and they adopted it in memory of them? Like the previous movies' Starfleet adopted the symbol as a tribute to the Enterprise? (or of course, because the creative team didn't do their homework)

~ I get the 'teleport from a warping ship to another warping ship' impossibility...but they didn't mention the problem with distance. We're talking about warping halfway across the galaxy, practically. I was a little whacked out by that one.

~ Still wondering how they can explain Chekov's appearance on the ship...although, a simple "different reality" excuse would work. He could have wound up getting fast-tracked to the helm in this timeline. But where's his Davy Jones hair? :)

~ Finally, here's a funny nitpicking of SecurityFAIL in the new movie.
