Because this little story wouldn't be complete w/out mentioning both.

The mechanic at FFA said he waited until 5:30, as their shop closes at 5:00.  I stared over at the window, where it clearly said open 8-6 Monday through Friday and didn't say anything.  I picked up my car w/out getting the timing belt replaced, and drove over to Teele Square Auto, who was my usual mechanic ever since I moved to Somerville.  He will replace the timing belt and make sure the car is in good shape.  Another good thing about his shop is that it's open til 10:00 (It's a service and gas station), so I don't have to rush home to pick the car up in time.

A comparison:
FFA: Parts - $427, labor $114, total around $567 (tune up, O2 sensor, 2 tires, spark plugs, air filter)
TSA: Parts - $270, labor $220, total around $520 (timing belt, which apparently involves much more labor)

Painful?  Yes.  The 60,000 mile checkup is the most painful, according to my owner's manual, and I won't be due for another round of maintenance until 90k miles.  Considering I commute to work, that won't come up for a good long time.  Now I can join the rest of the world who's living in the land of credit card debt.  It's only money, it will get paid eventually.

Oh, the victory part of the post?  My sys admin was ready to castigate me for leaving a back door password out of our computer image.  I was ready to just believe him and fess up, until I started one of our new computers and found that I DID include the backup password.  Point, me.  I've also fielded a couple of calls this morning where my recently learned trouble shooting tips fixed a couple of issues in no time flat.  Advantage, me.

Now, to rebuild some bridges.  This could be the hard part.  Wish me luck.
