Numbers can tell you information, but they can't convey emotion. Numbers can dictate the course of a game and tell you who won and who lost. They can't convey the dread as the most fearsome cavalry of the Warhammer world come rumbling towards you, or the elation as you see the enemy general pitched from his horse with a bolt shaft sprouting from his chest. Numbers can tell you whose army perfomed the best, but they can't tell you how much fun you can have.
I have quite a lot of fun.
I played five games, one against Orcs, one against Empire, and three against Chaos.
Orcs & Goblins - My undoing came as a resulf of a very (over)powerful spell, which stomped my army to pieces. I clenched my teeth and tried to keep a even smile, but every time I face that spell my brain boils. Oh well.
Empire - I was plagued with bad luck the first few turns of the game as I face a very large Empire army. The tide of the battle turned dramatically when his general's unit turned and fled, and I wiped him out. The momentum completely switched, and I had my first win of the day.
Chaos (Undivided) - this was against someone I play and lose to a lot. We went into battle with high spirits, but by the end the frustration was mounting. I made one mistake that slowly cost me my most expensive regiment, and when it died several other units paniced at the very end, and that was the game. In retrospect, it was a very close game and I had my share of good luck. It was one bad decision, nothing else.
The next day:
Chaos (Undivided) - this battle went much better, the dice went my way and I out maneuverd his army. His deployement wasn't the best, and he let himself get in range of my chariots. I didn't destroy his knights, but I did kill most of them and tied them up for the duration of the game, while I killed a number of his chariots and giant and other pricey units. A pretty decisive win.
Chaos (Slaanesh) - This game could have been a repeat of game #3, in that it was a tightly fought battle thame came down to the wire. I took an early lead by spearing his general with a lucky bolt thrower shot, but he quickly ground down units to catch up the points. I won the game, not by much, but decisivly. Both of us had a blast, and it was the most fun game of the tournament. What better way to end your day?
Battle - 65/100: Two losses (5 each), One win (15) and two Major wins (20 each)
Sportsmanship - 23/30 : I averaged 4 out of 6 each game, with one player giving me top marks, and a bonus point from one player for being his best opponent of the tournament
Selection - 14/15: Rating how flavorful and appropriate my army was, almost everyone thought it was a great example of an elven army. Nuff said.
Appearance - 44/50: This means my army was fully painted and based, each regiment had it's own markings, there was lots of shading and detail, and two people thought it was of superior quality, one of the best there. I'll take that!
The Grand Touranment Boston was an incredibly fun event. I cheered as my friends were recognized for major awards. I was inspired by beautiful paint jobs and amazing convertions. Most importantly, I had fun and felt a renewed appreciation for the hobby that I bemoaned so much in the past, that caused me so much stress.
Now, for a well earned sushi dinner, some Riesling, and a movie.
