Open Season on the Matrix

jchrisobrienToday is the release of Matrix Revolutions, and already the trash talk has started. Critics are either trashing the movie, or giving it backhanded compliments. Christianb posted this (spoilery) link showing what people are saying about it earlier. I can almost hear people now, saying "Oh the movie will suck and I think it's lame but I'll go see it anyway."
I enjoyed both the Matrix and the Matrix Reloaded. They were slick and dramatic and action packed. For those of us who weren't raised on wire fu action flicks, the fighting was breath-taking. For those of us who didn't take lots of philosophy in college, the intellectual parts were interesting and engaging. As basic as it might be, how many other movies are trying to make people think even just a little bit? For those of us who aren't a professional critic, we can sit back and enjoy the movie, not worrying that we will lose credibility if we actually ENJOY the movie.
And let's face it, some of their criticism is just stupid. They say it feels tired, recycled, and redundant. It seems like Reloaded with a little tweaking. They completely miss the point. This IS the Matrix reloaded, it's the second half of the film. Reloaded and Revolutions were filmed back to back and envisioned as one story with an intermission, much like Kill Bill was. There wasn't any time between the films for technology to evolve or improve, so the effects won't necessarily be that much better in this film. I don't see the critics ragging on Lord of the Rings, but you could lay very similar criticisms against it: yawn, another boring long shot of pretty country side; yawn, another pretty long eared person, I’ve seen better swashbuckling in many a movie.
I think Lord of the Rings and the Matrix are both very important films. They are what fantasy and science fiction films can aspire to. They show you how good the genre can be if you take good actors, state of the art special effects, and visionary directors. They inspire, challenge, and entertain.
All the mudslinging and bad reviews won't stop people from going to see this movie, and the critics know it. Perhaps that is what gives them the freedom to bash the movie so aggressively. They have been robbed of their choice, robbed of their purpose. They, like Agent Smith, have become free to act as they wish.
