The Infected were pretty creepy, since they moved at regular speed and growled all the time. But they weren't quite terrifying. They were mortal, they died easily, and in time they would all starve to death. There was still a high level of tension through the movie. I was tense the entire way through, waiting for that corpse to spring to life, or race around the corner. They seldom did, but the Possibility of it was very real and constant.

There were several nice nods to Dawn and Day of the Dead. For a while I thought Jim was just there to Do Dumb Things, but in the end he underwent quite a transformation. Or de-evolution, depending on your point of view.

There were several odd moments of hope, in a movie that reeked of despair. Hope's an unexpected emotion to find in a zombie movie. If the movie had ended before the next 28 days, I don't think I would have been disappointed.

I liked the (relatively) uplifting ending. If they'd left things ambiguous as to whether or not the world is consumed by zombies it would have been no more after-the-movie thought provoking than most apocalypse films. The fact that we’re pretty sure that the contagion was limited to the British island and had pretty much burned itself out by the second 28 days made me think about the social, political and economic ramifications of the whole event, rather than just thinking "Oh, the planet's fucked."
