The Kick. A family of taekwondo martial artists stops a robbery attempt, and the thieves are not too happy. The family goes on the lam, staying in the country with an uncle and niece who is a muy thai fighter. In addition to the external threats, family drama ensues when the son wants to pursue a career as a hip-hop dancer instead of becoming an Olympic taekwondo fighter like his father. The choreography and aerial kicks were astounding, thought it did have a bit of a video game feel near the end. The story and acting can be quite poor in these kind of movies, but there was a solid plot, good acting, and even moments of real humor. A family friendly fighting movie which was extremely enjoyable and had the audience cheering a dozen times. 4/5 tornado kicks
Under the BedA troubled teenager returns to his hometown after being institutionalized for burning down his old house to get rid of the "monsters" therein. No one believes his story except his younger brother, who is also starting to hear scary noises and sounds. The two brothers do battle against this all too real evil. This was a great throwback to 80's style spooky films, with a very classic Spielberg feel to it. The relationship between the brothers, the anger and pain of the father, all come together in an atmospheric mix. The film switches gear a bit and becomes quite violent and scary. A great story about a primal fear we've all felt when we were young. 4/5 beds
Roller TownSlide into your too tight shorts, strap on those skates, and get ready to boogie! A film from the comedy troupe Picnicface about a group of roller skater friends in the 70's, fighting to save their roller rink and disco from the soulless entertainment of video games! The vibe on this film was similar to last years classic The FP, but even more tongue in cheek. The comedy offerings at Fantasia have improved year after year, and this was a nice palate cleansing film and damn funny to boot (er, skate). Complete with a hilarious Bee Gee parody band, Roller Town will skate it's way into your heart, you dig? Solid. 4/5 disco balls
The Human RaceThe last film of the festival embodies everything good about Fantasia: independent movies, uncompromising visions, and riveting stories. Eighty people are snatched from a city block by a white light. They are told they must race against each other. If you are lapped twice, or leave the course, or touch the grass, you die. The first ten minutes of the film totally throw you for a loop, and let you know what a wild ride you are in for. All manner of competitors abound: the elderly, children, priests, a deaf couple, a pregnant woman, and a former soldier and current amputee. A film that highlights the best and worst in all of us, and the heights and lows that people can sink to when their lives are at stake. This film blew me away, firmly one of the best films of the festival. There will definitely be a viewing someday. 5/5 running shoes.
That brings the cinematic adventures of Fantasia 2012 to a close! I drove home with Tony and Juliet after a quick stop at Dakin farms (for the best bacon in the country, according to Tony) and then home. Already I'm looking forward to Fantasia 2013! Bon film, everyone!
