Our Warhammer club name is the Lost Legion, and this weekend I managed to live up to that moniker. What should have been a five and a half hour drive to Cherry Hill ended up taking ten hours. There were several lost turns before getting to the Tappen Zee bridge, a missed turn that took me back over the bridge and back again (in rush hour traffic), some more missed turns driving onto the NJ turnpike, a massive amount of traffic on the turnpike itself. Things improved as I took the last few exits to Cherry Hill, but then the lack of left hand turns had me hopelessly lost. My hosts directions didn't seem to pan out. I thought for a while he was just screwing around with me, my car was running out of gas, as was my stomach. Finally I found a familiar landmark: Nagoya sushi. I stopped in for a quick bite and had quite a nice surprise: all sushi 50% off! Well sated with tasty fish, I re-oriented and arrived at my destination. I think I finished half of the bottle of Kraken run that I received for my birthday, which coined the second catch phrase of the night "Release the Kraken!" The first one was about "not playing to fail."

Two carloads of us piled in the next day and drove to Media for the tournament. Day one was hard fought, two draws and a loss. There was free lunch (included with the tournament fee) smoked chicken and chili, quite good! We passed on watching the fights and went to a house party thrown by a friend of the host. We made quite an impression, especially when I took over the pool table for a few games. The red shirt was also a big hit. My friend Larry from New York is three times as boisterous in real life as he is on line, and I received quite a bit of trash talk from him over the weekend. Didn't bother me in the slightest, I was too busy laughing from most of it. I would pay money to watch a show where this guy just read the morning paper. He's filled with comedy gold.

Sunday we traveled back, and I picked up a win and another loss for the event. I places middle of the pack when it came to overall points, and a few of my losses were very punishing. My mood took a dramatic turn for the better when I won an award for 3rd best painting (out of 40 armies). I spat cider all of the floor when I heard my name announced. The ride back went infinitely more smoothly, the instructions were perfect and peace of mine is definitely worth $8 (the fee for taking the GW Bridge). Five and a half hours and I was back home.

The camaraderie this weekend was really where it was at. Hanging out at the house, talking to a bunch of guys who seem like you'd never want to know them from the message boards, and finding out they are so different in real life. Friendships grew that weekend, and I was extra glad I didn't back out when my ride bailed on me. It was an Epic Adventure, any way you slice it.

Now to get some more of that Kraken rum...
