A received a nice surprise today. Four of them, in fact. One of my old friend's from college tracked me down over the Internet, and sent me an e-mail. He was a member of my gaming group, and a good friend outside of game as well. In quick succession, three other members of my group e-mailed me as well. As we talked and caught up, the memories bubbled back to the surface.
Most of the time when I transitioned from school to school, I left all the memories and people behind. Most of the memories were very painful, and the "friends" weren’t worth keeping in touch with. Grade school? Crap. Junior high? Really crap. High school? One or two worth nothing, but mostly crap.
College was the first time I left behind people that I cared about. Various gaming circles, thespians, housemates, lovers, friends. I left it all because it was time to do so. It's flattering to know that I left something behind that caused folks to remember me and seek me out almost a decade later. It's warming to know that when we do talk, so much of the good resurfaces, and so little of the bad.
