Can anyone teach me to sew

I have a pretty simple repair to make before I go to DragonCon, and know there are some sewing geniuses out there.

I have a skirt with a strap almost torn off. I'm trying to get it repaired before Dragon Con. Safety pins are punk rock and all, but skirts really aren't supposed to look punk rock. ;)

It's a pretty simple thing. I have a skirt with straps attached to it, and one of then has almost torn loose. I have it pinned now, but would like to sew it back on. I think I havethe principle of sewing: needle through thread, poke through fabric repeatedly close together, drawing the string tight until it is all bound together, but I'm just guessing. :)

I recomend putting a knot at both ends of the thread, otherwise it becomes the Japanese art of Zen sewing, wich I would hazzard to guess isn't quite what you are after at the moment.
