Clothes make the man

For those of you who are in the know, what do you think of H&M? Decent quality, stylish, or quick to wear and tear? I need to pick up some new jeans, and maybe T shirts. I'd like to get some decent quality items that look good AND will last for a bit.

If you have any other favorite places for shopping (guys especially, I KNOW some of your metro's out there shop. Don't deny it!) give a shout out!

They have some surprisingly high-quality stuff, but men's sizing & cuts tends to geared toward the slighter side.

I've gotten junk there, and I've also gotten great things that have lasted for years and become wardrobe staples. Worth trying things on, certainly.

All of my nicer/classier items are H&M. I like how some look, the prices aren't that bad, etc. Any item I've had at most a year, so I can't comment on longterm life, but so far they're all in good shape.

Depends on the item. Overall, H&M's men's stuff seems pretty well-built, and the jeans wear well.

Check out Zara as well! There's one in the Natick Mall, another on Newbury (where the Armani cafe used to be)... Zara's pretty much the Spanish H&M.

imho, H&M = Target * european aesthetic. Relatively stylish, cheap, inconsistent sizing and you're lucky if they're worth wearing two years from now.

... but, at their prices, even if you have to replace every two years, it's not too bad.

Most of what I have picked up from H&M have been tops -- t-shirts and dress shirts mostly, and one pair of linen pants. The dress shirts are doing ok, but the t-shirts are fading fast and the linen pants didn't last a month before ripping.

I bought a pair of not-particularly-fitted linen pants from H&M that ripped right across the ass at a wedding rehearsal dinner. It was pretty awesome to have one of those cliches of embarrassment actually happen to me in real life, especially because I didn't actually notice the ripping until well after it happened.

I still buy a ton of shit there.

The H&M at the Cambridgeside doesn't sell men's clothes, just fyi.

I've had good luck with the work shirts that I've bought from H&M (they've stood up well to 2 years of frequent wearing + washing), but the t-shirts tend to disintegrate quickly. I've actually got a couple of Gap men's t-shirts that have lasted well, and plan to pick up another couple of them soon. I'm going to be dropping into the Downtown Crossing H&M tomorrow afternoon if you want to use me as a quality consultant. :)
Oh, and Urban Outfitters had a pretty big pile of jeans in their Harvard store the last time I was in there, but I didn't check them out.

My younger brother, Rob, loves to shop at the Banana Republic. Hmmm... I wonder where he got that from?

Anyway, when I shop for the men in my life I usually go to both H&M and Banana Republic. Both stores have a great mens section. However, if you're specifically looking for jeans, I would go with H&M. Banana Republic doesn't carry jeans.

I'm generally unimpressed by H&M menswear. I think cris's description is about perfect.

my biggest problem is that while their clothes are cut for people with slight frames [of which I am one] they're also generally cut for people who are at most average height [of which I am not]

H&M is hit or miss, IMHO. I prefer Express. The clothes are not that expensive and they wear well. Oh! and they actually have some style to them.

I've heard guys talk the same way about Express' menswear, which is why I am commenting.

Worth checking out.

For dress shirts, Macy's has done me well. I actually found a really nice black dress shirt with no pockets - something I'd been having a hard time finding (brand is Donna Karan).

For jeans, I pretty much stick with Lee and Levis. I used to wear Calvin Klein jeans, but they're not well-made.

For t-shirts, just pick interests and find t-shirts to match. Er...unless you wanted plain t-shirts, in which case American Apparel should suffice.
