The Grey Havens
J.R.R. Tolkien, and AC/DC. A copy of the book was buried with him, and AC/DC was playing at the wake. * When the last time you heard AC/DC at a wake? ** He was a very amazing man. I saw pictures of him with bushy hair and a beard that hipsters would die for. I saw him goofing with his friends, standing tall in his military uniform, smiling gap-toothed in his cub scout poster. The goofing trend continued with his family, in his garden, at the beach, on vacation. You could see the playfulness, the warmth, and the love that radiated from him like a star. Hanging out with his family in the basement he turned into a family entertainment center, I was surrounded by the influence of his creative and joyous mind: a bar, pool table, basketball throwing arcade style game, racks of headphones, a painting of Kramer next to a large photo of Einstein, signed sports pictures and license plates and a hundred other odds and ends that told the story of a life.
It gave just a small taste of who he was. Enough to show the tremendous impact he had on his family. Enough to show how much he'd be missed. Enough to show how much of him he left behind, to remember and cherish.
The funeral was at a Catholic church. The organ music at the end of Mass wove in with Led Zeppelin as we walked outside. When he was laid to rest his family walked barefoot and said their goodbyes, just as he would have wanted. The weather was as beautiful as anything you're likely to experience on this planet.
Rest in peace, Mr. Bunn. Ask J.R.R. what he thought about the movies when you see him.
* I was thrown for a loop for a moment when I saw the other party having a viewing that night was Mrs. O'Brien. No relation!
** You all had better be rocking out when I go, dammit. I'll leave a playlist in my will.

My mom says, "It was quite a tribute to dad's life."
And she wants a print out.
I was saving this to show it to her...
