blog like it's the end of the world day
When the big change comes in your life, there are two ways to deal with it. You can either collapse under the pressure, or you can let the pressure focus you, and rise above it. It's funny, so often we get so wrapped up in little tirival issues. Someone didn't return my phone call. My Tivo didn't record the last epsidoe of the Sopranos. My neighbor parked me. We keep thinking little things like that matter. Those are the kinds of things that normaly set me off. When the big changes happen, like when I had to buy a new car, or was going to be stranded in an airport overnight in Virginia, I was calm and collected, and knew what I had to do.
It's like that now. The cold clammy day doesn't matter. The boredom at work doesn't matter. What matters is how I'm going to get home. I'm sure the T has stopped running by now. I looked outside the window and saw the streets filled with people running in every direction. Cars plowing into each other on the city streets, the MassPike is a parking lot. More accurately, a food court.
People in the office are freaking out. No one's died yet, but no one's left the building yet either. I've been very calm. I've been watching them. From what I've seen, all of them are moving very slow, shambling, blood streaked and hungry. I'm relived, believe or not. If they were fast moving, or rage filled, I'd likely just end it right now. If they're slow, then I have a chance.
I'm going to be leaving the office soon. I don't want to get stuck in the city. Too much population, too few open spaces. My apartment will be pretty easy to protect. I can forage for supplies on the way back. Anyone else in the Arlington area, anyone who's in from out of town and is reading this (ha! why haven't you evactuated yet?) throw me a text message. The phone's may be all tied up, but texting should work. We can meet up, we'll do better in numbers. Keep your cool, avoid mobs and narrow streets.
It's the end of the world, and I've never felt more alive.
