They took the sky from me

an excerpt from Unseelie's LJ, about the fate of Firefly.

When Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon looks back on 2005, he
can take comfort in knowing that his film-directing debut, the sci-fi Western
Serenity, resurrected his canceled-too-soon cult classic TV series
Firefly, and was also one of the year's best-reviewed movies. ''I should
say I'm above reading reviews,'' he says. ''But I would be lying.'' Alas,
Whedon's fond memories are also tainted by Serenity's status as a
franchise nonstarter; despite Universal's best marketing efforts, the film only
mustered $25 million. ''In the end, it was what it was: a tough sell,'' says
Whedon, adding that it appears the Firefly saga has reached its
conclusion. He has no regrets and he's moving on.

Maybe Joss will be nice enough to answer a few questions about where the show was going.
In the grand scheme of things... well, fuck the grand scheme of things. There was a powerful lot of good storytelling to come out of that Verse.
It will be a shame not to see them.

That's from Entertainment Weekly, I think, I was just reading it in the bathroom... He said he was working on a comic series, sort of the things he would have done with Buffy Season 8.

And I got to see Bones for the first time tonight. I liked it.

I would definitely pick up the Buffy season 8 comic. Maybe he could do something like that with Firefly, but I suspect he wants to put that behind him, and focus on future endeavors.

I have yet to finish watching the series. I've told myself I would do that before seeing the movie, which I'll have to wait for the DVD release of anyway. Know of any places that are renting the series?

[identity profile] silas7.livejournal.com 2005-12-21 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Most video stores that carry TV series should have it, the one across the street from me does. Netflix also has it. And I have it, if you want to borrow a few disks or watch a few episodes sometime.

you can borrow my set if you like. it seems to spend very little time at home. it's always out visiting with someone. :)

From Whedonesque.com

All right, now I have to jump in and set the record straight. EW is a fine rag, but they do take things out of context. Obviously when I said I had 'closure', what I meant was "I hate Serenity, I hated Firefly, I think my fans are stupid and Nathan Fillion smells like turnips." But EW's always got to put some weird negative spin on it. But so we're clear once and for all: If you read a quote saying "I'd love to do more in this 'verse with these actors in any medium" all I'm saying is that Nathan has a turnipy odor. It's not his fault, he doesn't eat a lot of them but everyone else in the cast noticed it and tht's not really something I'm prepared to deal with any more. And Jewel said outright she wouldn't do scenes with him except stuff like the SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER funeral scene which was outside in a high SPOILER wind. So if I do manage to find another incarnation for my beloved creation, it will have been totally against my will.

I hope that clears everything up. Oh, and when I say I want to do a Spike movie, it means I have a bunion on my toe.

(no, actually me.)

Well, that's something. I mean, it's most likely we won't see any more screentime for our Big Damn Heroes, but at least he hasn't abandoned it. Christ, I mean if they can do Starship Troopers 2 or Mansquito or just about any of the crap you see on the Sci Fi network, they can do some direct-to-video Firefly episodes.

Did you see there's a DVD about Joss and his writing style? I'm tempted to buy it, since he talks alout about how he comes up with his stories and characters.

ooooooh, no, I didn't see that!!

i thought firefly was a christian show.
i'd seen like...2 minutes of it once and it was all about the bible and lesbians.

so i figured it was christian show for sexually repressed christian teen boys.

then in the past week you and one of my friends have BOTH talked about it being good. and neither of you are sexually repressed christians.

or at least, he isn't. and you really don't strike me as that sort.

The basic premise of Firefly is set in our future. A bunch of folks leave earth and colonize another solar system. There's a civil war, one side (the Alliance) wins and runs the entire setup, while the losers (the Independents) try to squeek by day to day life. One of those Independents runs a cargo ship, doing whatever odd jobs and crime he can with his loyal (and sometimes hilarious) crew. They pick up some passengers, one with a major secret, and the stories roll on from there.

It's very well written, a good blend of action and comedy, and manages to combine the science fiction and western genre in a really effective way. It's well worth watching.

I'd rather have a good story cut short, so I can run with it using my imagination, than have it drawn out and wrecked. Not that I doubt Whedon could keep the quality up -- I'm just trying to look at the bright side.

True that. It's all about enjoying what we've got. And that includes the DVD that CAME IN THE MAIL TODAY OMG!!!1!!1

It's true that the box office is not great, but I have read that Universal is waiting for the DVD sales numbers before making any decisions about continuing to invest in the franchise. This might be it for the big screen, but straight to DVD or tv miniseries are apparently not out of the question. Here's an IGN FilmForce thing on the subject.

[identity profile] silas7.livejournal.com 2005-12-21 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be sweet. I won't hold my breath, but if they do rake in the bucks on the DVD sales, that would be encouraging. I'd be fine with a low level version of the show (either on SciFi or a direct to DVD release).

[identity profile] spitcurl.livejournal.com 2005-12-21 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It was also a very competitive time for films -- I went to more movies this summer/fall than in many years, and I STILL missed Corspe Bride & Serenity, and that is almost unforgivable. I went to 4 movies in a week at one point. Aiee.

[identity profile] silas7.livejournal.com 2005-12-21 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Movies were still in a big slump, and that hasn't changed until very recently with Harry Potter, Narnia, and Kong dragging folks back into the theater. I'll probably see them all over the Christmas break!

[identity profile] spitcurl.livejournal.com 2005-12-22 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Saw Harry Potter, but need time & people to go see Narnia ASAP! :(
