Sexy Trains and Spooky Houses

Two of my more satisfying Netflix rentals were 2046 and Session 9.

2046 is about a  womanizing writer in Hong Kong.  He writes stories about a train that leaves for the year 2046, where people go to try to recapture their lost memories.  The authors real life experiences work their way into his fiction, and the movies follows several of his future and past interests and how they impact his life and writing.  The movie is well shot, and the incredibly beautiful Ziyi Zhang is in the film.  She's not jumping around or dueling with swords, but... well, I imagine a lot of you will enjoy this film.  It's sumptuous.

Session 9 is quite the creepy horror film, and it's set in the old mental hospital in Danvers (for all you New England folks)  A hazmant crew takes on the job of cleaning up the old mental hospital.  The crew is rife with tension and inner demons, ones that come out to play the longer they work in the hospital.  The atmosphere is amazing, and highly tense. The ending is either a nice bit of twist, or high predictable, depending on who you ask.  Either way, the ride itself is enjoyable and the movie is creepy in a way that most horror films today aren't.  Check it out.

My step-mother grew up in Danvers and knew some of the crew who shot Session 9, They had some interesting stories to tell about filming at Danvers State...

I wonder if all the stories they told during the films were actual folklore? I loved the parts about people who were committed in the 1800's for things like "unrestrained passion" and the like!

The building is an amazing piece of work, both viewed from above and within.

A good friend of mine was a PA on that film. As far as I know, the stories were 'true'.

And it's apparently the scariest place in the world at night.

I can believe it. It's amazing how our mind can fill us with such fear. We deny the existence of God and devils, but make us stay inside an abandoned mental asylum for a night...

If you are a fan of Gothic revival arcetechture it is a beautiful, beautiful building. And interestingly enough, shaped like a bat when veiwed from above:)

I've been driving past for most of my life but I will never go up there.

They had a shot like that in the movie, with it all spread out and bat-like.

I'm really strongly tempted to see it, but it isn't open to the public, is it?

[identity profile] talesinsdaughtr.livejournal.com 2005-08-05 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's not open to the public. And there is a trespassing notice that is heavily enforced if they catch you (notice the 'if they catch you' part). That hasn't stopped people from going up there anyway.
They're building a housing development on the property now, so the security might have been stepped up.

The best part about Session 9 is getting to say "DO IT GORDON!" after you watch it.

I live in the weak and the wounded.... doc.

I admit the ending caught me by surprise. They did a really good job of making the movie seem supernatural, when it wasn't. Implied ghosts can be as creepy as "real" ones.

How'd you get 2046 from Netflix when it has a release date of Aug 9th??

It, like the plethora of japanese thrillers before it , has also been optioned into an American Release. You can go to wildaboutmovies! and enter for tickets to the Boston Screening. At least that way if the American version sux you won't have paid for it :/

I went forward to 2046 and rented it from their "classics" section. :)

The film was released in 2004 in China, which is probably how they got a copy of it. I have a feeling it will be shortened in the American release. It does move a little slow at times, near the end.
Still, it really holds your interest for the most part.

Yeah, I thought it was weird Netflix would have it. I'm waiting for the theatrical realease.

See it on Netflix if you can, I think that is the original release, the American release may be shortened. If it's not 2 hours and 7 minutes long.... IT'S CRAP! (channeling a Scotsman)

Session 9

At first I was disappointed by Session 9 - that it wasn't a supernatural thriller, but more psychological.

Since going to met state - i've come to appreciate the direction they went in instead. Agreed, good movie.

It had a certain Blair Witch vibe at some points.

It really showed how your brain can fill in the horror in a mundane situation. You know that the building you are in is empty, but ANYthing can be hiding out in the dark. A building with decades of insanity screamed into it's walls can't be very healthy, either. So much creepiness!

I MOST heartily agree! It just "feels" bad. Plus you're own mind wiggin' on the incredible silence and heaviness of it all. It's intense. And I can imagine if you did have a "troubled past" situation like that would be sure to help bring it out :/

it was creepy when i went to a casting call there (for the crucible film). the auditorium floor was warped, scary peeling institutional paint, so overgrown and yet so beautiful.

i've gotta see the movie.

saw seesion 9 with shauna a while back
in a theatre in SF

when the credits rolled - silence
when the lights came up - the entire audiance was silently staring at the screen.

all of us were seriously creeped out.

shauna and i agreed to never talk about it again...

the sound - of pulling the ice pick out....
*twitch*

You knew the guy with nicotphobia was going to get caught in the dark, but it was still awful when it happened. Could it have happened in a creepier place? All those suits, those pale white hands grabbing you in the dark...

When I was in high school,
I skipped a few day of school,
and would climb all through out the building "for fun."
It was seriously way creepy and empty.
And there would be rooms full or old patience records that had been abandoned too.

I think I am going dancing tonight at ?Avalon?.
Hiphop room and then techno room.

RANDOM PICK

You're being Randomly attacked with my nonsensical words
i can write sentences shorter than the one before it
watch me as i do it, because i'm doing it right now
ever so gradually my sentences are getting smaller
man i'm lucky because those match up perfectly
that one was a little too short, relatively
it's probably gonna get harder real soon
smaller sentences are harder to adjust
i'm getting claustrophobic now...
i cheated with an ellipsis, haha
i cheated with non-words, haha
haha, i did it again cuz i can
i totally cheated i give up
actually i dont give up
i'll just slowly fade
instead of going out
like kurt cobain
with a shotgun
to his face
totally
rectum
