Kicking Ass and Dulcet Tones

Today we kicked more butt at work than we did yesterday, and we kicked quite a bit then too.
The bad news is, my assignment isn't for two weeks, it ends on Wednesday.
The good news is, they want me to come back in for an extra day on Thursday. I guess I made a good impression, and that's what I'm all about. One week will lead to a month somewhere else, and maybe even a temp to permanent position. *crosses fingers*

While we were waiting for backups to complete tonight , we were kicking around ideas of careers that don't involve computers. I mentioned some of my interests (painting, playing saxophone). Derrek (an old salt of a temp) suggested looking at graphic art positions or searching the Phoenix and auditioning for a band. I have no experience in graphic arts, but it could be something worth looking into as far as taking classes go. I finally have some new reeds, so perhaps bringing the saxophone down from the attic would be worth it. Shaking the rust off, playing scales, working on my fingering... heh... I heard someone playing the saxophone in the T on my way to work. Such beautiful sweet sounds he made. Fifteen years ago, I was making those same beautiful sweet sounds.

The graphic arts field is weak, dude, weak. The only successful freelancers we know have other financial support, and everyone else is clamoring to get by just as much as the rest of IT, et al. I know a couple people who thought of taking some design classes or certificate, and none of them have entered the field as they are now competing with all the out of work designers with years of exprience and bachelor's degrees. Heck I'm a designer with a couple years experience & a bachelor's and I'm competing for junior level work with peopple with 10 years of experience. Its the same story everywhere, the economy sucks.

Saxamaphone sounds very personally rewarding though. :)

If your mad saxophone skillz don't return, just put a microphone to it and hook it through effects pedals to make a big splash in the art-music world. Then again, the pay for artsy non-mainstream stuff wouldn't support you very well.
