Dec. 27th, 2013

Last Saturday night started out with a fine dinner party in an old friend's new condo. The food and conversation was pleasant, and ended with a very lopsided game of Cards Against Humanity. I headed out to Sin-O-Matic afterwards, and the evening went south. I had my plans to deal with such situations, but in this case one of the DJ's was not co-operating by spinning really awful house music. I ignored a few other issues too. On a whim I went out to Ceremony on Monday, and had exactly the opposite kind of evening: talking with friends, setting up a date to play pool with Brittany, chatting about game and exchanging emails with Alina, and more contact exchange with Elena. The social whiplash between the two nights was very extreme, and very welcome.

Chirstmas eve was spent with an expanding crew: Richard, Sara, the Teichs, Katy, and Tricia. Tons of Chinese food was consumed, stockings were opened, and lots of poppers exploded. In lieu of a movie , we watched the pilots for two shows that weren't picked up. Three Inches was a superhero show about people with very minor abilities, led by James Marsters (no powers except his cheekbones). 17th precinct was a show I heard about years ago that never made it; it was Ron Moore's follow up Battlestar Galactica (with Apollo, Baltar, Six, and Sam Adama from Caprica) about a world where magic was the norm. Imagine if Harry Potter grew up and became a cop, and basically that's it. It had a great premise, it's a shame it withered on the vine.

Christmas Day I spent alone, with more Chinese food, the Hunger Games, and the Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug. It was a conscious choice, and I feel good about it.

This weekend I'll drive down for the actual family Christmas celebration. After that there will be New Year's plans, which I'm always twitchy about. After that, we will finally get back to a regular schedule.
