Vegas, baby.
Apr. 29th, 2013 09:54 pmForty three years old, a swinging bachelor, and this was my first time in Las Vegas. Work sent me out to attend the Kaseya Connect conferece, their yearly expo. I wasn't excited about the trip, because of the problems with getting reimbursed for it, and nervousness about what I would be expected to absorb. Would I be worthe the money they spent? (Hey, look. Anxiety again).
I made my way to the airport over public transportation, and checked in to the plane and finished a quick Johnny Rocket's burger (delicious) just as they were seating my section. The flight was uneventual, some headphones and Bad Boys on TV helped drown out a shrieking baby. I finally touched down and took what ended up being a very long and indirect route to the hotel.
The Four Seasons has to be the nicest hotel I've EVER stayed in. You've all seen movies about Vegas, and what you see is pretty much what you get. The Four Seasons is in the Mandalay Bay building, which is atop the Las Vegas Strip. From my 37th story window, I can see the Luxor right in front of me (a huge pyramid). The MGM Grand. Excalibur. The Cosmopolitan. All the gaudiness and excess and grandeur just spread out in front me. The stuff of cinema and fiction made real.
I started knocking off items from my check list of places to see: I dined at Lotus of Siam, the best Thai restaurant in all of Las Vegas, and it lived up to expectations. From there I took a cab to Fremont Street, and the Golden Nugget. Fremont Street was featured in Angel (along with many other movies) and it was an utter cacophany. Just outside the madness of Fremont Street I had a drink at the Griffin, a local dive with good cocktails, and another at Insert Coins. This bar had video games around the perimeter, and a glass bar that glowed and changed colors, with high dev flatscreens above where you could play Street Fighter, Injustice, Marvel vs. Capcom and other games while you drank. I know several of you would adore this place. The evening ended by visiting and old friend of mine where she worked, then I made my way back to the hotel.
Today the first round of Kaseya seminars are over. I've gathered a lot of information about the neweest release of my product, and seen some awesome future additions. Tomorrow there will be more conferences, more meetings with Kaseya techs to talk about the various components of the program, and more shenanigans. Tonight there is a pool party, and tapas, and who knows what else?
This is Vegas, baby.
