Friday: Our party awoke well into the morning, amazingly refreshed after our evening of debauchery. Nicole and Forest and I were veterans, but even Vanessa was smiling and ready to begin the day's adventures. We walked down St. Catherine St., which was holding some kind of street fair. Why? Why not, it's Canada! We broke our fast at Reuben's, another one of our dining staples. I had the Road House burger for lunch, just because of the name (rrrRoad House!) Forest accused me of kung fu treachery, and ordered the black jack burger. Nicole had a tuna melt, and Vanessa ordered a cob salad that size of a mountain that never seemed to grow smaller, regardless of how much she ate. With lunch acquired, Forest departed for an amusement park, while the rest of us watched our first film of the day.

I (heart) Doomsday - J.A.DeSeve theater. Partners in Crime: Vanessa, Nicole

Max is a Mad Scientist who loves making doomsday devices with his las assistant and love interest Tatiana. A horrible accident leaves Max scarred and limping, and Tatiana in a coma for three years. She awakens with no memory of her past life, and works as a clerk. Max builds a robot duplicate of himself, whose mission is to woo her and help her remember her past life. The robot starts having its own thought and feeling about Tatiana (or Jennifer as she calls herself), and soon he and Max are wooing her at cross purposes.

This was a local film, shot in Montreal on a $30,000 budget (so practically nothing). Some of the dialog and acting was atrocious, but most of it was amusing. There was a strong Dr. Horrible vibe through the movie. I can definite see this film doing well at Comic Con or Dragon Con. 2/4

Phasma Ex Machina - J.A.DeSeve theater. Partners in Crime: Vanessa

A young man who lost his parents tries to raise his younger brother, but both of them are drowning in their sorrow. The older brother is a science wiz, and working on creating a device (mostly out of things you can buy at a hardware store) that will communicate wit the dead, and bring their ghosts back to earth. His device works, but with unexpected and scary consequences for his family, and another.

This was also fairly low budget, and similar to the film Primer (in tone), which had a much richer emotional content. I got all teared up at one point in the movie. While there were some creepy and scary parts in the movie, this was more about tragedy and loss, and how people cope with it. 3/4

A Serbian Film - Concordia Hall theater. Partners in Horror: Forest (Tony, Hilary)

This films gets its own entry later. Suffice to say it was the most horror-inducing film I've ever seen. I felt like part of my soul died just watching it. Forest needed some air after experiencing it. We both needed something light hearted and funny to sooth our brains afterward. Fantasia didn't disappoint.

Mil Mascaras vs. the Aztec Mummy - J.A.DeSeve theater. Parters in Masks: Forest, Vanessa, Nicole

An Azetc mummy is brought back to life by a group of Indians, and it begins to try to take over the world. Only Mil Mascaras can defeat the evil mummy and save the day!

Mis Mascaras is an actual Mexican wrestler (luchador) and even at 67 he's an imposing figure. The movies is delightfully campy, as you would expect from a luchador movie, and all of us howled with laughter during the course of the film, proving that Forest and I weren't dead inside after all. After our marathon day, we slunk back to the hotel, sneaked our friend Cris into the room, and crashed. My sleep was nightmare free.

Next up: fire alarms, futile trips, and films films films!
