jchrisobrien: (big trouble!)
Navigating Logan airport was a breeze this time around, though I can't recommend Johnny Rockets for food.  They make a good milkshake though.  I had an aisle seat this year, so little opportunity to look out the window.  JetBlue has TV's in the seats in front of you, and satellite radio for your listening pleasure.  It seems you can't go anywhere these days w/out seeing little cords dangling from people's ears.  Before I get all old and cranky on you, I had little cords dangling from my ears, too.  I watched a few Simpsons episodes (ah, that inanimate carbod rod) then fired up Shaun of the Dead on my laptop.  I also read an article on Harry Potter in the Entertainment Weekly some prior passenger left in my seat.  The cute Chinese girl asked to read it once I was finished.  I obliged.

If you're going to spend a weekend playing with toy soldiers, at least you can show up to the event in style.  Our local club member picked us up in the airport in a BMW convertible.  We dropped out bags off and headed right back out again for Fuddrucker's hamburgers.  Orlando is still as gaudy as it was last year.  The land is extremely flat, so the building try to make themselves extra big and loud to attract your attention.  I focused more on the beautiful skies.  A storm had rolled through before we arrived, and the clouds were whipped into fantastic shapes.  The sky was orange and gray to your right, then blue and silver to your left.  Fuddrucker's had ostrich this time around.  It doesn't take very different from beef, but it much leaner.  I promise you stomach, that's the last time you'll have nothing but hamburgers for a long time.  Still, Fuddrucker's are completely worth it.

The beds at the Caribe Royale were too soft for my taste, but we got a little living room in our suite.  The resort itself was very nice.  All the towers ring a large pool in the center, complete with a mountain of rock, waterfalls, and a slide.  In between my games, we'd congregate by the pool to watch the bathers and sip pina coladas while talking about our dice fortunes.  I do recommend the coladas.  I ended my first day with an impressive 0-3 record.  I briefly considered jumping in the pool to drown my sorrows, but instead drowned them in a mountain of sushi at Amura.  That was the most sushi I've collectively ordered in my life, and sadly our group fell about 18 pieces short of finishing it.  The white tuna was tasty, but didn't quite roll my eyes back of make me pound the table.  It would have only made the other guys uncomfortable anyway.

Sunday morning was uncomfortable.  Problems with our checkout, another loss, and a very unsatisfying lunch left me in a bit of a mood.  One four pack of wine later (bless you convenience stores with liquor), I sat down for my last game.  This dog's day had come, and I finally edged out a win.  We hustled our collective asses out to the airport, skirting a pretty serious storm.  Ah, thunderstorms, how I miss your majesty.  No problems at the airport, and a smooth ride home, except for some serious turbulence as we approached Boston.  Worse than a roller coaster.  I was even worried for a second.  Then I kept hearing Austin Powers chanting in my head "turbulence, oh I'm falling over again!" and relaxed.  One long humid train ride later, I was back in Boston and in my own much more comfortable bed.

It was a bit of a conscious effort, but I was able to have fun on the trip.  My army didn't perform well, but that more a reflection on the list than me or my dice.  I think I made major strides at breaking that chain of events where things don't go out as I want them to, and I immediately make the jump to "I suck."  That alone was worth the price of the trip.  Now to apply that to things not game related.  But hey, that will probably require another vacation.  Heh.
