Sunday: Critical Mass...
There's always a desperate feeling when I walk into the dealer rooms at Dragon Con. All sorts of tables crammed with merchandise for the sci fi/gamer/horror crowd. Lots of sometimes bored, sometimes anxious venders hoping that this will be their big weekend of sales: swords, quilts, posters, dice, T-shirts, pirated movies, you name it. I walk by the White Wolf booth, glancing at the new releases but picking up nothing. My purchases are small: a stack of cool dice, some glossy glass counters for VTES, and a DVD copy of Ring. After remembering Mike Coleman's review of it, and seeing the trailer for the American remake, I decided to take a chance on it. Rumor has it it's a damn scary movie; perhaps I'd better invite some people over to watch it in case I get too scared.
I walk by the booths where Robin Sachs (Ethan Raine) and Armin Schimmerman (Principal Snyder) are sitting, say hellos, and head back out. I see Lou Ferigno too, and he has aged far better than Arnold did. Lou is simply massive!
If you want to point and laugh at the LARPer's follow this link:
Note to self: next time I try a LARP, ask if it is an Elder game first. This wasn't the worst gaming experience I had, but it was pretty sucktacular. I did my best to stay in character, learn things, and help get my elder supported for Prince. But when the "Caitiff" breaks Elysium and uses Obeah, causing an hour long mass combat that was only two rounds long in reality, I quickly sink under a table and take a nap. I get to spend the next twenty minutes listening to some Caitiff spouting off on how stupid we all are, and that she could decimate entire countries with her vast power. She then vanishes, the ST's take great effort to explain how all inspiring this is. I yawn, very loudly and obvious. There's never a good reason for 4th generation vampires in a game. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER!!! The only good part was talking trash to the gaggle of 6th gen. "Caitiff" and their "4th Gen" leader. I don't care how powerful you are, you have no status, so sit down and shut up.
If you want to skip ahead to the rest of the day, go
I left the LARP and walked across the street to the sushi restaurant I saw. After this afternoon's debacle, and realizing all I had to eat was a scone, I decided a treat was in order. It was OK, but their spicy tuna roll was an offense against God and Man. The fancy roll was tasty, and the nigiri were plentiful and fresh. So overall, it was the highpoint of the day. Back to the room for a nap, and good conversation, then it's time for one last night on the town.
The Masquerade was tonight, which meant you got to see all the best and biggest costumes on display. It's truly an entertaining sight, seeing so many people pay homage to the genre that have inspired them. I think the hightlight for me was watching a group of Cobra soldiers in full retreat from the marines from Appleseed. Absolutely priceless. The David Bowie/Goblin King imposter was very impressive as well.
I wandered around in my strappy raver pants, a box of CDs in one hand , a bottle in the other. The discs were gone quickly, and then it was time for Buffy kareoke. They played the musical, and everyone sang along. I stepped up to the front for the Demon's song and soft shoes, to thunderous appluase from the room. The rest of evening passed by in a blur of dancing, sharing drinks with a Bondage Faerie Pricess, dancing, yet more photos from cute strangers, and at last somehow, impossibly, ending up in my room at 6:00.
We were due to wake up in three hours.

I can't believe you saw Principle Snyder in person! Did you have the urge to kick him in the nuts? Heh!
