I say never, never, never offer to help a family member set up a broadband connection for their office network.
Just came back from CT...my fourth trip down there (at 2.5 hours each way) to set up my father's DSL connection at work. At least this time the telco bothered to actually deliver the circuit! But, on the plus side, everything is working now.
Ugh. Her computer worked out OK in the end. I used the Compaq disc to reimage it, and at least now she's back to where she started. I suspect the latest version of AOL messed up her computer. What a surprise...
Lesson learned on my end....when you have the choice between a hardware and a software solution, go with the hardware. The ISP wanted us to use a software PPPoE dialer for the DSL modem....cuz I guess they were too cheap to provide DSL routers....or didn't want people connecting networks. The PPPoE software didn't agree with Server 2000, so we bought a little Linksys Cable/DSL router. Much more elegant and simple to configure.
