As weekends go, this was weak.

Today was marginally better than yesterday, but it still sucked. Saw Snatch, which was amusing but very much like Lock Stock and 2 Smoking barrels. Maybe a little too much so. Listened to the commentaries, Guy Ritchie is kinda an asshole. Watched Scandal. John Hurt was extremely unappealing, and I didn't feel all that bad when he got his comeuppance in the end. It's all well and good to play with fire, but when you get burned... what do you expect? War of the Worlds was the most entertaining film of the weekend. Chilling at times, yet the sugary ending didn't spoil the whole experience for me. It had a lot of disturbing things to say about people: The innate likeability of humanity shrinks as the number of them grow.

Guess the week's about to start soon.

I'm going to enjoy it even if it kills me.

I actually liked your comment. There was a scene in the movie when Tom Cruise had the one working van as he approached a mob of people. The entire mob swarmed the van and pulled them out, even though there were far too many people to fit in it. A man pulled a gun on them and took the van, then another man shot him for taking the van. The van was wrecked, and no one could use it.

I felt pretty disgusted at people, right about then.

It's a classic illustration of the struggle for recourses. Much like the tragedy of the commons, if there are too many people attempting to share too small a resource they will end up destroying the resource and no one benefits. That may have been a graphic Hollywood version, but the same thing happens in the real world all the time.

I couldn’t agree more that increasing the numbers of a population beyond a certain point is a recipe for disaster... and that’s why I support z.p.g. :)

Sometimes I support n.p.g, but only in the form of a limited run zombie invasion. Complete with Queen on the jukebox.

ZPG is now Population Connection... but the name "Zero Population Growth" has more kick in my opinion so I tend to still use it.

In any case they're all about stopping the current path humanity is on. The one in which we will soon outgrow our resources and head toward a major die-off. They try to push the fact that education is power and we can stop the impending crisis before it occurs. At least they used to, to be honest I haven't looked into their actual posted principals in ages. But this is as good an excuse as any :)
